Menstrual Hygiene Commemoration

We had month long activities to commemorate menstrual hygiene. Here are some of the activities we carried out:

Training

Pad & Panty Training Manual

Compiled a Menstrual Health and Hygiene Education and Awareness Manual and a Pad/Panty Making Manual for trainees to be distributed alongside sewing notions during skills training and future pad and panty making activities.

Hosted a Menstrual Health Expo under the theme, “Action and investment in menstrual health and hygiene” in Zimbabwe for the very first time. The event sought to acknowledge the gains made and celebrate the contribution of all players in the fight against, “period poverty” and stigma

Amazing Facts About Menstruation
  • Girls can get pregnant whilst on their period – shocked, aren’t you? Well guys, the odds of a woman getting pregnant depends on here ovulation cycle rather than the periods themselves
  • Girls will spend nearly 10 years of life on their period – from the time of her first cycle to menopause, the average woman will have around 450 periods in lifetime. That’s a lot of periods!!
  • Menstruation is normal! It is the monthly shedding of blood and uterine tissue and an important part of the reproductive cycle. Typically, it lasts 2-7 days.
  • On average women dispose off between 11000 and 16000 pads or tampons in her lifespan. They end up in the landfill or blocking the drainage, reusable materials are zero waste
  • Your periods get worse when it is cold – cold weather can impact your period making it heavier and longer than normal
  • Your brain can be affected by your period – research suggests that cognitive functions and attention span may be affected because of period pain – that explains those episodes of brain fog and lack of concentration then – phew!
  • Buying reusable pads may feel like an expensive purchase but remember, that’s all you’ll ever need to spend on sanitary products for three years, it saves you money!
  • The amount of blood is usually between 6 and 8 teaspoons each month
